Newfoundland the Root Cellars

Quite simply a root cellar is a subterranean storage room for root vegetables. Before Green Giant started offering frozen vegetables and before fridges came with freezers attached and before chest freezers became a common household appliance enterprising folks had root cellars. This underground room had a door so that you could walk in, although you might have to stoop a little if you were over five and a half feet. From the outside only the door was visible and without any natural light you might need a lantern or a flashlight or you could be bringing back parsnips when you wanted carrots. 

 This one was on our hiking route in Twillingate.

 

These two were side by side and since one door was closed we investigated the other one, below.

The door may be open but I'm not tackling those weeds.

I think it would be great to have a geocaching challenge that went to numerous root cellars. Geocachers love that type of challenge.
